Waqra Pukara Trek 1 day

A good tourist destination of Cusco Peru

The walk to the ceremonial-religious center of Waqra Pukara is quiet and impressive, full of landscapes and natural and cultural settings, where the Andean man left an imperishable mark that lasts to this day. Archaeological monument that rises to 4300 m.a.s.l. on the canyon of the Apurímac River built on living rock, showing zoomorphic forms that in time immemorial served as a cult to the Andean gods.

Waqrapukara is an archaeological fortress whose shape resembles that of a horn, located 115 kilometers from Cusco in the province of Acomayo, district of Acos. The trekking route as well as the archaeological complex has nothing to envy to the best destinations for adventure and cultural tourism in the Peruvian Andes, which offers us an unforgettable and satisfying experience.

itinerario

Day 1: Cusco – Sangarara – Waqra Pukara – Cusco

We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am. We’ll travel south from Cusco to the village of Sangarara for approximately 3 hours. During the journey, we’ll have the opportunity to admire Pomacanchi Lake (3670 m.). We’ll then pass through the villages of Marcaconga and Sangarara, the end of the asphalt road. Here, we’ll take a detour that will lead us uphill on a dirt road to the Aqokunka area (4600m), the end of the dirt road and the starting point of the hike to Waqra Pukara (approximately 45 minutes).

We’ll commence our hike to this magical and remote place, along the way marveling at the wonderful geography of the Andes. We’ll also have the chance to spot birds in flight and mammals that are often seen grazing in the vicinity.

Our hike will follow a straight path, followed by a slight descent, and after approximately 1:30 hours, we’ll arrive at Waqra Pukara. Here, we’ll take a short break where you can enjoy a snack before our guided tour of the archaeological center. You’ll be amazed by its enigmatic construction, surrounded by immense rock formations. Looking over the abyss, you’ll be able to spot the Apurímac River. If time permits, we’ll proceed to observe the rock paintings of the Qanchi ethnic group (pre-Inca), featuring representations of llamas and other zoomorphic and/or anthropomorphic figures. This location is situated just a few minutes from the fortress.

We’ll begin our return journey along the same path we hiked for approximately 2 hours. Then, we’ll board our vehicle and return to Manca Conga, where we can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After our meal, we’ll return to the city of Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of around 7:00 pm.

Notas

Why Choose the Waqra Pukara Trek?

The Waqra Pukara trek offers serene trails and unique landscapes. Upon reaching the archaeological center of the same name, you’ll be astonished by its enigmatic and imposing construction.

What’s the Weather Like on the Waqra Pukara Route?

The weather in this region is unpredictable and can change frequently at any time of the year. You may experience all four seasons in a single day, with cold, wind, snow, rain, and sunshine. Hikers should be well-prepared with the appropriate gear and ready for variable weather conditions throughout the day. However, the Cusco region has two distinct seasons: the dry season (from April to September) and the rainy season (from October to May).
